Green District Allston Supermarket

Green District Allston SupermarketIt looks like there could be more big changes on the way for The Green District in Allston. The Joshua Tree, a sports bar on Commonwealth Avenue, has shut its doors as of January 1st. The developer of The Green District is in the process of purchasing the property. If the sale goes through, it will mean a huge change for this flourishing Allston neighborhood.

The reported plan so far is to fill the space with a “specialty grocer”. Allston lacks a centralized grocery store in this area. Presently, Shaw’s in Packard’s Corner represents the main choice for Allston residents. While there is a Whole Foods within driving distance or a T ride of The Green District, there is no walk-able alternative to Shaw’s. Once this sale is completed and a lessee is chosen, Allston will finally have a second centralized grocery store.

The Joshua Tree has been in business with its present owners for some time. Formerly named Tonic, Joshua Tree has seen a steady decline in business over the past few years. The bar made a change in names again becoming Barley Hall for a short stint. The new moniker didn’t seem to sit well in the market, however, and the name was very quickly changed back to Joshua Tree. Mostly a sports bar by day and hot spot for a younger crowd at night, Joshua Tree became somewhat out of place in the newly repositioned Green District.

This new development is quite exciting. Residents of The Green District will have a grocery store right around the corner from their front door if all goes as planned. This neighborhood is quickly becoming one of the finest places to live in Boston.
